Botox Injections in San Diego CA
Botox Cosmetic, or botulinum toxin, gained popularity in the early 2000′s as an aesthetic treatment. While used for many years previously as a therapeutic treatment for muscle spasm, it was soon discovered that botox had the added cosmetic benefit of eliminating facial wrinkles. The most commonly treated areas are the horizontal forehead lines, vertical frown lines (between the brows) and the radial “crow’s feet” lines or smile lines emanating from the outer corners of the eyes. Additional uses of botox at our San Diego practice include for lip depressor muscles, masseter muscle hypertrophy treatment (reshaping the jaw area), platysma bands in the neck, and verticle lip lines. An important distinction for “newbies” is that between wrinkle relaxers (botox, dysport, etc.) and wrinkle fillers (restylane, juvederm, radiesse, etc.). Wrinkle relaxers like botox are more commonly used from the orbital rim and upward in the face, while wrinkle fillers are more commonly used below the eyes (smile lines, lips, etc.)
Dysport is an other version of botulinum toxin that hit the market more recently, and has proven just as safe and effective. Because the onset of action of dysport is slightly faster than botox, there may be some price variability in the market between these two brands, with some clients preferring one over the other.
Even infants have lines of facial expression.
The problem is that as
we age these lines become fixed and permanent,
Millions of botox treatments are performed each year, and it has proven itself safe and effective. In fact, botox injection ranks as the most popular cosmetic procedure. Our doctor and nurses utilize strict dilution and handling protocols as recommended by the manfacturer, ensuring the effectiveness and safety of your treatment.
Botox works by preventing the release of neurotransmitters that cause muscle contraction. As the muscles relax, so do the wrinkles. The nerve endings gradually regenerate, and after a period of 3-4 months the effects of Botox wear off.
Risks of Botox:
The risks of botox injection are relatively minimal. Bruising or swelling can occur at the injection sites, but can be minimized by applying cold compresses and using careful injection technique. Most patients are able to still show facial expressions- just without the accompanying deep lines. Ptosis, or droopiness of the upper eyelid, is very rare and generally subsided after several weeks.
