Eyelift surgery, sometimes known as eyelid surgery, is the process of removing excess skin from the upper eyelids. It also reduces the bagginess of the lower eyelids. The technical name for this procedure is blepharoplasty. This surgery is most often done for cosmetic reasons. Sometimes, it is recommended for people to improve their vision.
Who is a Good Candidate for Eyelift Surgery?
Certain characteristics make eyelid surgery a better option for a person. Here are the most important ones
- You are in overall good health.
- You have an excessive amount of fat deposits on or around your upper eyelids.
- The skin around your eyes sags.
- This may or may not impair your vision.
- You have bags under your eyes, no matter how much sleep you get.
- There are fine wrinkles on your lower eyelids.
- There is excess skin or just droopiness around your lower eyelids.
- You are not a smoker.
- You have a positive attitude and realistic expectations about your results.
Is There a Right Age for Eyelift Surgery?
Generally speaking, this surgery is done on people who are 35 or older. Some people feel the need to get it done younger, however. This is especially true if baggy eyelids have been passed down to you genetically. Certain lifestyle choices can lead to bagginess around the eyes as well. Your plastic surgeon will be more interested in the condition of your skin than your age.
Who is NOT a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
While eyelift surgery can improve the self-confidence and/or vision of many people, certain factors or conditions may make it a bad choice. Look for a different, non-surgical option if:
- You are a smoker.
- You are suffering from a major infection or illness.
- You have an eye disease.
- You are trying to fix drooping eyebrows (a brow lift can be done in conjunction with an eyelid lift, however.)
What to Expect from Eyelift Surgery
After getting this procedure done, you can expect the upper area of your face to look younger and more refreshed. The result is a more “open-eyed” look. People who are looking to change their face more extensively may benefit from a facelift instead of eyelid surgery. If you are getting the surgery done because the excess skin is impairing your vision, you can expect a major improvement in your quality of life after you heal from the surgery.
