Botox is one of the most common injectable products used in our San Diego medical spa. Why has botox retained its popularity for over a decade? There are a number of reasons.
First of all, neurotoxins such as Botox cannot be easily replaced by injectable fillers. Botox works by temporarily weakening the muscles that cause facial wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead lines, and smile lines (crow’s feet). Injectable fillers work by adding volume. In most cases, without treating the muscles that are actively creating the lines-simply adding volume will not do the trick. That is why fillers work best for static lines-lines that don’t change significantly with muscle motion- and hollow or flattened areas (cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, lips, ect.).
Secondly, botox has been shown over time to decrease the formation of and severity of wrinkles. This was shown in a study of identical twins, one of whom used botox regularly, over ten years. With other factors controlled, the botox-treated twin was shown to have fewer static wrinkles.
Dysport and Xeomin are two competitors to Botox that are commonly used in San Diego. All of these products have proven safe and effective, with some clients preferring one over the others, and others seeing no difference. In some cases, Botox appears to have a more localized effect, which may be more beneficial for some patients-less for others.
