Buccal Fat removal is performed to thin out otherwise round faces, specifically in the region below the zygoma and the jowls. This is a relatively quick procedure, but it requires an understanding of anatomy to avoid sensitive structures like the parotid duct, as well as to efficiently locate and extract the fat.
Dr. David will examine your face to determine if you are a good candidate for buccal fat removal, or if perhaps you would benefit from alternate procedures such as shaping the cheeks or jawline. Ideal candidates have oval to round faces and healthy fat distribution.
When performing buccal fat removal in San Diego, Dr. David typically uses local anesthetic combined with mild sedation or twilight anesthesia. A small incision is made in the mouth on the inside of each cheek, and the fat is located and gently teased out. The base is then trimmed and cauterized and the incision is closed with a layer of absorbable suture.
Recovery from buccal fat removal surgery is generally very easy for our patients, with minimal swelling or discomfort. Pain pills are typically prescribed, and soft to normal diet is followed for one week. Most patients resume work or school the next day. Swelling generally subsides and final results are evident within four weeks, at which point patients appreciate a narrower, more defined and angular cheek region. For certain patients, the results from this relatively simple procedure can have a profound effect on their appearance and self-esteem.
