BOTOX® is a very well known treatment for unwanted facial lines and wrinkles. It has been used since the 1980’s to help people achieve their ideal appearance. It has been FDA-approved to treat lines between the eyebrows since 2002. So, how does it work?
How Does BOTOX® Work?
BOTOX® is used to block signals from nerves to your muscles. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by frequent contractions of these muscles. As a result, blocking the nerve signals results in the wrinkles to soften and diminish in appearance.
When people squint, frown, laugh, or make other expressions, their body releases the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter then binds with receptors in order to make muscle contractions happen. When BOTOX® is injected, it binds with the acetylcholine instead, meaning muscles receive no signal to contract.
This treatment is best suited for crow’s lines, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles. It is not ideal for sun damage or wrinkles caused by gravity.
BOTOX® Treatment
BOTOX® is a quick and simple procedure. The patient does not require any anesthesia. A needle is used to inject the BOTOX® into very specific muscles in your face. The BOTOX® begins to work blocking the muscle contractions in about 48 hours. Patients see results 3 to 7 days after the treatment. It is best to avoid alcoholic beverages for at least one week prior to the BOTOX® appointment. Anti-inflammatory medications and Aspirin should be stopped at least two weeks before. This will help ensure the patient has no bruising at the injection sites.
BOTOX® Results
Patients can expect the results of their BOTOX® to last them up to three months. Eventually, it does wear off and allow muscle action to return. This leads to the wrinkles and lines coming back. Treatment can be repeated. Over time, the lines will come back less drastically because the facial muscles have been trained to relax.
Benefits of BOTOX®
